Mar 6: Participate in a Twitter Chat on Global Perspectives on the Fight for Higher Education

On March 6 from 2-4pm (EST), HASTAC and The Futures Initiative will continue this semester’s University Worth Fighting For events. In “Global Perspectives on the Fight for Higher Education,” we will share strategies across the globe and highlight the urgent need for abolition and decolonial education. The discussion will (re)focus our collective attention on how the university can be repurposed to serve the larger public towards liberatory ends. The livestream will be available at: http://bit.ly/fight4edu-live.

After the event, between 4-5pm (EST), HASTAC Scholars Grace Gipson, Roneva Keel, Ali PearlKristopher Purzycki, and Dhanashree Thorat have prepared a Twitter chat where we will focus on questions of colonialism in the classroom, the connection between the university and its surrounding communities, radical pedagogies for social justice, among other things. Please join us via hashtag #fight4edu!

Here are the questions we’ll discuss if you’d like to prepare a couple of thoughts in advance:

  • How does language and rhetoric currently play an oppressive role in education?

  • What are the legacies of colonialism and racism in the classroom/educational systems?

  • How can we move beyond legacies of colonialism in the classroom / educational systems / curriculum? What might that look like?

  • What does decolonized education look like? (K-12 and onward?) How can the University become a space of subversion & resistance?

  • How can we bridge the divide between the university and its surrounding communities?

  • What can university educators and administrators do to strengthen the global community?

  • As instructors, what kinds of challenges have you faced in implementing a radical pedagogy for social justice?

  • What are some possible strategies for confronting that resistance in a productive/instructive way?

  • Educators in the U.S. and abroad: How has the current political climate in the U.S. affected your pedagogy?
